By Drew Meyer, Men’s League Vice President
ALTA is not just a tennis league; it is a powerful, successful, non-profit institution with over 60,000 members. Our organization stands as a vibrant foundation for community life in Atlanta, sustained by a rich legacy and the passion of our membership. As we rapidly approach our centennial anniversary, we face a pivotal moment: ensuring ALTA continues to evolve so it remains the premier tennis and pickleball experience for both our lifelong members and the next generation of players.
ALTA’s future viability depends not on basic survival, but on strategic modernization to manage our tremendous size and scope. To continue serving our established membership while actively attracting the next generation, we must incorporate cutting-edge skills and contemporary perspectives into our volunteer leadership.
As a large non-profit, ALTA runs complex business operations that manage thousands of matches and serve our membership every season. To achieve continued excellence and to drive growth, we need specialized talent. We are looking to our current members — particularly younger professionals with critical, modern skills — to step forward and lend their expertise to this worthy cause.
The rewards of volunteering at an organization you are truly passionate about are substantial. Beyond the satisfaction of supporting the sport and community you love, becoming an ALTA leader offers unique personal and professional benefits:
- Mastery of the league: As a coordinator, you are directly responsible for facilitating league play, assisting members and team leaders, and ensuring consistent interpretation and application of our rules. You become an expert, a true guardian of the game’s spirit and structure, by mediating disputes and approving match results. This is the best way to truly understand how the entire organization runs.
- Shaping the future: We need younger voices to guide ALTA into its next century. By getting involved, you can help steer the league’s evolution in areas like technology, outreach, and business operations. This is your chance to inject modern ideas into the organization while respecting the traditions that built it.
- Fulfilling a purpose: ALTA is more than competition; it is about connection. By helping to secure the organization’s future, you are actively preserving and strengthening the social fabric of the Atlanta tennis and pickleball community for tens of thousands of members.
The Front Door: Becoming an ALTA Coordinator
The most direct and rewarding path to getting started with ALTA as a volunteer is to become a coordinator. This is the front door to everything and helping run our various leagues is the best way to learn how our organization truly operates. Coordinators are essential spokespersons for ALTA, whose every action reflects on the entire organization.
We are seeking individuals whose passion for ALTA’s operational success is matched by a desire to apply their skills beyond the tennis court, in areas such as optimizing complex administrative systems, crafting a compelling digital presence, or improving our member experience via the website. If you possess these skills as a part of your background and experience, we encourage you even more to get involved.
Volunteering as a coordinator is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the highest level of league management. If you have a deep interest in ensuring the integrity and success of ALTA’s leagues, we urge you to reach out directly to learn more about becoming an ALTA coordinator. Please reach out to me at mensvp@altatennis.org if you are interested.
ALTA is a community built for you. Now, we are asking you to help build its future. Your involvement is the key to our next century of success.
