What a perfect time to reflect on the competition, friendships, and sportsmanship that the summer season handed us! From the first match through the playoffs and City Finals, players, captains, and volunteers have once again demonstrated the dedication that keeps ALTA thriving.
Summer tennis always presents unique obstacles, and this summer was especially challenging. High temperatures, vacations, family commitments, and the 4th of July match day made it difficult for captains to field full lineups. However, these scheduling conflicts provided an opportunity for teams to demonstrate one of ALTA’s greatest traditions: Courtesy. Coordinators and captains communicated early and agreed to play lines before match dates. While never required, extending the courtesy of playing early can help both teams avoid defaults, allow more players to participate, and create a better competitive experience for everyone. As vice president of the Mixed Doubles League, I’ve received multiple emails about extended sportsmanship and respect, which have long been hallmarks of ALTA tennis. A little flexibility often goes a long way in preserving fair competition while maintaining the spirit of the league.
As the summer 2026 season concludes, I congratulate every player, captain, coordinator, and volunteer who contributed to another successful year. Whether your team made it to the playoffs, celebrated a division win, or is already looking ahead to next season, every match has helped strengthen our ALTA community.
We are now preparing for winter 2027 registration. Winter league play offers outstanding tennis in cooler conditions and provides another opportunity to enjoy the friendships and competitive spirit that make ALTA special. Successful teams know that planning starts well before registration opens. Captains should reconnect with returning players, recruit new members, and evaluate their rosters to ensure there is enough depth to handle injuries, illnesses, adverse weather, and other scheduling conflicts throughout the winter season.
As we close another memorable summer, thank you to everyone who stepped onto the court, volunteered behind the scenes, or supported teammates throughout the season. Your enthusiasm and commitment continue to make ALTA much more than a tennis league. It fosters a community built on competition, respect, sportsmanship, and lasting friendships.
