Understanding the issue of match length
One of the most common complaints each season concerns the length of tennis matches. This is a challenge that affects all ALTA Leagues. Extended warmups are a recurring problem, with pre-match routines sometimes lasting 20 to 30 minutes, far exceeding the intended 10-minute guideline. These delays are compounded when players disregard rules around changeovers and breaks after splitting sets. It is important to recognize that adhering to a timely warm-up and following match rules is not unsociable. On the contrary, efficient warmups and proper breaks allow matches to conclude sooner, uphold the spirit of competition, and demonstrate good sportsmanship to spectators, juniors, and newcomers experiencing league play for the first time.

Tips for streamlining match preparation
The most important way to keep matches running on time is to be ON TIME! Yes, Atlanta-area traffic can be a huge problem. Construction and rush hour seem to be everywhere, every day of the week, right? Be sure to check your match location before match day and give yourself more than enough time to get there. If you do hit a traffic jam or something keeps you from leaving your house when you wanted to, COMMUNICATE with your captain, your partner, or your opponent and let them know you are on your way! There is nothing worse than standing around wondering if a player is on his/her way. A quick call to let folks know you are stuck behind a wreck or road construction will ease the tension and nerves of those waiting for you.

On the days that outside events do not cause you to be late (and we hope that is most days), you can help accelerate play by preparing in advance. Before the match begins, take care of essential tasks such as going to the restroom, filling your water bottle, checking for wrist bands, visors, grip tape, and ensuring you have an unopened can of tennis balls. Make sure to jog and complete your stretching before stepping onto the court. By adopting these habits, you will notice a significant reduction in the overall time it takes to complete your matches.

Preparing ahead and arriving on time are your contributions to “TENNIS DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME”!
