Summer tennis is in full, sweaty swing in Atlanta. Let me prepare you as a captain and a player. As a captain, I have a few tips that I pass on to my teammates and to you all at every age/level.

Hydrating is the most effective method for better performance in extreme temperatures. It’s a necessity that needs to be handled before match day. Drink plenty of water and/or electrolytes days in advance. Eat fruit in the mornings before mixed play, and may I suggest hydrating with coconut water. It’s my favorite.

Be sure to get in some practice time in the heat. Even though it’s not fun to do so, it will help you get used to the conditions come match day. That way, there is one less thing to worry about.

Protect your skin. Sunscreen, a great hat, and some killer sunglasses will help you perform to your standard. I also recommend arm sleeves made for UV protection. I use this for two main reasons: sun protection and sweat protection, so my hands stay dry longer.

Dress for the hot conditions. Light clothing is key. There are great dry-fit options these days; I like to cover up as much as possible and have a spare kit for when I split sets. Coming out on the court for a third set with dry clothes could help you get the W!

Bring the following essentials with you to the court: spare grips, extra racquet, sweat bands, a cooling towel, and ice in the cooler.

Be smart with it all. Follow these steps and enjoy your summer tennis.
